Be willing to be bad at something.

Are you like us? Expert goal setters? We find ourselves dreaming BIG, which is a good thing, as we all need to imagine ourselves IN our goals to be successful. The little steps that get you from that dream to the finish line are often far less exciting than setting an exciting goal.

Sociologist and Author, Christine Carter, had some poignant advice on exactly why we do this and how to get whittle away at your goals in her latest Ted Talks.

“The truth is that our ability to follow through on our best intentions, to get into a new habit like exercise or to change our behavior in any way, really, doesn’t actually depend on the reasons we might do it or on the depth of our convictions that we should do so….
It depends on our willingness to be bad at our desired behavior.”

Christine boils it down to a simple fact, “the harder something is for us to do, the more motivation we need to do that thing”. Short on motivation? You’re also not alone there. Motivation is something that waxes and wanes, and until you have a solid habit, it seems that motivation is usually scarce. When you have to muster up the motivation, humans tend to just go the path of least resistance.

So according to Christine, in order to establish a new habit, you have to let yourself be bad at it. Boil that big goal down to the smallest possible goal you can, something that almost seems miniscule.

Helping a Hundred

helpingahundredOne year ago I started my whirlwind ride with Body by Vi. I set a goal, picked a kit, and started a challenge. I was just trying an new product to lose weight, but little did I know it would change my life in ways I never expected.

I started thinking about losing weight, then began working with others and started another business (like I needed another business), and now because of the health transformation I have seen in myself and in so many others, I am on a mission to help others where they are.

Visalus’s (Body by Vi) mission is to crush the obesity epidemic. I have been obese for most of my life. I was a big kid, and “sturdy” young adult, and as my kids got older and older, the pounds just keep coming on. Just like so many others, I went on every diet in the book, but my weight always came right back to my “set point”.

I had accepted this – I always wished I could be thinner, but it was only when I decided to be HEALTHIER that this worked for me! I am still a ways from where I want to be, but my blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugars are all in the normal range. My joints don’t hurt as much, I exercise daily and have taken off about 35 lbs of fat so far. I want to lose another 30 and by just eating better and exercising I am doing that.

For my 1 year anniversary with Body by Vi, I am starting a very ambitious challenge! This time it’s not about me, but I know I benefit through working with others. My goal for my next 90 days is to help 100 people get healthier using our PROJECT10 plan!

In a nutshell, I am looking for 100 people that want to lose 10 lbs of fat or gain 10 lbs of lean muscle. That’s it – 10 lbs. My goal is to find these folks (who do you know?) and work with them for 90 days and see if we can get to that magic number of 1000 lbs lost!!

I have a form to fill for each person. We will write down their goal and decide what they will do to achieve it. I will check in with them every week via phone or skype, and we will encourage each other. At the end of their 90 days, I will tally all the pounds lost and health gained and share the results. I can’t wait!  It’s the little part I can play in fighting obesity. It’s a way I can give back and be encouraged myself. It’s all about working together towards a common goal.
