Your attitude makes a huge difference in nearly every aspect of your life, from your personal relationships to your success on the job.

Being more optimistic is also linked to having a stronger immune system. However, it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of pessimism, especially if you’re struggling with paying the bills or have relationship conflicts in your life. Here are some tips for how you can turn it around and cultivate a habit of optimism.

Count Your Blessings

This may seem like an obvious suggestion, but the power of gratitude can’t be overstated. According to Harvard University’s health newsletter, developing a habit of gratitude can improve your overall happiness and make it easier to stay in an optimistic frame of mind.

Try beginning your day with a mental list of the things for which you are most grateful, or write a gratitude list in your journal before bed. Your list of blessings can be anything from enjoying the cute antics of a puppy to having a job that you like. Nothing is too small to count among the good things in your life.

Fake It – But Only to an Extent

You have probably heard the advice “fake it ‘til you make it,” and this is also true when it comes to cultivating an optimistic outlook. You have a great deal of power over your mental attitude and disposition, even during times when your circumstances are different than you wish they were. Simply setting your mind with a determination to look for and find the bright side can influence your reality so that your outlook actually becomes positive.

At the same time, it’s also important to remember that you can’t completely force yourself to feel happy. Attempting to make yourself feel something when you don’t can sometimes make you feel worse, because your mind and body know when you’re not being genuine. This can feel like putting even more pressure on yourself. Instead, simply reminding yourself often of the things that are good in your life can put your focus in the right place, and positive feelings often evolve naturally from there.

Create Some Natural Positive Vibes

Does it seem like experts are always telling you that exercise is the magic cure for everything?

Well, in the case of improving your outlook, exercise is proven to work. Whether you choose the calm peace found in a yoga class or the feel-good endorphins of a half-hour on the elliptical machine, moving your body will help you feel better, inside and out. Studies have shown that regular exercise enhances motivation and mood and is associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety. If you could take a pill that would actually make you feel more optimistic, wouldn’t you do it? A half hour of exercise a few times a week has the same benefits, without any negative side effects.

Make Necessary Changes

While it’s well and good to stress the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, the truth is that some circumstances make it hard to see the brighter side of life. If your job makes you miserable, work on getting a different one. Seeing a counselor can help if you have difficult personal relationships. If you’re unhappy enough with your life that it’s hard for you to see the good in it, you owe it to yourself and to your good health to work on making changes for the better. Even the effort of working toward making changes can bring positive changes to your outlook… even before you’ve achieved them, simply because you know that you’re making progress.

  • “Study participants who typically napped during the day were 12% more likely to develop high blood pressure over time and were 24% more likely to have a stroke compared with people who never napped.
  • If the person was younger than age 60, napping most days raised the risk of developing high blood pressure by 20% compared with people who never or rarely nap, according to the study published Monday in Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal.”

The AHA recently added sleep duration as one of its eight essential metrics to optimal heart and brain health.

I’m not diabetic, but [unfortunately], I’m an expert

diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine.

It’s also a disease that can change your life if you let it. There are two types and they are very different.

Type 1 is a chronic condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin.

Type 2 is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).

BIG Difference. So I got to be an expert over an expanse of 30 years. I first watched my mother deal with Type 2 diabetes – and since that was in the 60’s and 70’s, treatments were not very effective and she suffered a lot of bad side effects. My next experience was when my 13 month old daughter started showing signs of something wrong – weight loss, thirst, lethargy. Type 1 is immediate and deadly. If a person is not treated, they die. And yes, that is my 13 MONTH old baby!

We started our education right then, and 7 months later got another lesson when our 7-year old son fainted in the shower one morning, and we discovered, he had Type 1 Diabetes too. Fast forward 2 years, and our oldest – in 6th grade at that time – came home and said “Mom, I’m really thirsty and I’m peeing a lot!”. To say that we were devastated is an understatement, and back to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis we went.

Don’t believe the Midlife Myths!

But, looking at myself in the mirror today — age-related fine lines, wrinkles and gray hairs aside – I also see the results of good habits I picked up early in life. If you’re just out of school, ready to retire, or somewhere in between, don’t let anyone tell you it’s too early or late to start taking care of yourself. We were having a birthday party yesterday on our deck and I was reminded that at 3 PM was “Taps Across America”. I don’t have an instrument, so walked outside prepared to play taps on my phone, when a clear, soulful rendition began a few streets away. We all paused and gave our thanks. You probably have heard the word “metabolism” thrown around. People often say, “Your metabolism slows as you get older,” or “He doesn’t gain weight because he has such a fast metabolism.” But are any of these statements true? What is metabolism anyway—and how does it affect your weight?

“When people refer to metabolism, they’re really talking about metabolic rate, which, in simplest terms, is the number of calories you burn every day. Think of those calories like money. “You can be in surplus, which means you store calories, mainly as fat, or you might be in deficit, meaning that you’ve used up your stores, just as you might your bank account,” says Marc Hellerstein, MD, PhD, professor of human nutrition at the University of California at Berkeley.”

A recent article in Real Simple discusses ways to increase your metabolism… follow these tips and incorporate your favorite Limitless tools (products) to help you along.

  • Build Lean Muscle Tissue- Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend not only doing aerobic activity, but also strength training, and there’s a good reason for that. “The more lean tissue you have, the more calories you burn, which is why strong people burn more calories just sitting around,” Dr. Hellerstein explains. One of the best ways to build lean muscle is resistance training. Every 2 pounds of increased muscle on your body will burn an additional 90 calories a day, increasing your resting metabolic rate, Dr. Fertig says. Aim to do three strength training workouts a week, recommends Dr. Hellerstein. Doing yoga can also increase muscle mass.
  • Eat More Fiber
  • Eat Less Sugar

Health experts generally recommend that adults sleep for seven to nine hours a night.
