I remember lying on the snow banks in spring (I grew up in the far north) and holding tin foil under my chin to take advantage of every chilly ray of sun, not wearing sunscreen, indulging in too much “Happy Hour” and extreme dieting, which led to weight fluctuations that kept getting harder and harder to tame.

But, looking at myself in the mirror today — age-related fine lines, wrinkles and gray hairs aside – I also see the results of good habits I picked up early in life. Fortunately they’re simple things that anyone can do to reach midlife in half decent shape. If you’re just out of school, ready to retire, or somewhere in between, don’t let anyone tell you it’s too early or late to start taking care of yourself. 5 Ways to Live a More Limitless Life

We all know people who always look on the bright side–and they might be onto something.

A study published in Health Behavior and Policy Review found that individuals who considered themselves optimistic were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and were more likely to participate in healthy behaviors such as abstaining from smoking and drinking, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly.

Of course, for some people, staying optimistic is more easily said than done. Staying optimistic in the face of the nightly news can be a challenge.

You can’t control what’s happening in the world, but you can control your own attitude. Here’s how to reap the benefits of staying positive.

1.     Eliminate Negative Self-Talk.

Your mom always told you if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. But do you extend that same courtesy to the way you talk about yourself?

Negative self-talk only serves to highlight your shortcomings and darken your mood, so try this exercise: The next time you feel self-doubt coloring your thoughts, think of three positive things about yourself. Making positive self-talk a habit can boost confidence and banish a bad mood.

2.     Be Grateful.

The great Winston Churchill once said:

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” 

Perhaps that’s what separates optimists from pessimists–the ability to see the positive in every situation. Take the time to be grateful every day, whether it’s writing in a gratitude journal or counting your blessings before bed. Feeling grateful can highlight the silver linings even in challenging circumstances.

3.     Laugh!

Don’t forget to make time for humor, especially since laughter can elevate your mood. Go see a funny movie, have lunch with a few funny friends, watch silly cat videos online. Make sure that laughter is part of your daily life and it’ll be hard to be pessimistic.

4.     Practice Mindful Meditation.

Taking a few moments each day to step back, ponder, and meditate can have a positive effect on your mood. If the idea of meditation seems strange, try this: Set a timer for five minutes and find a quiet place in or around your home. Grab a cup of tea, watch the sunset, or simply just enjoy being unplugged for a few minutes. Doing so allows you to slow down and banish negative thoughts while allowing you to focus on an optimistic attitude.

5.     Get Moving.

We all know that exercise can have a powerful effect on mood, thanks to endorphins that release when you participate in anything from yoga to running. Set aside time to exercise each day, even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block.

Don’t let get work stress, family obligations, or even the nightly news get you down. There are many reasons to be happy. Make optimism a daily goal; you can add positive activities and reflection to even the busiest schedule.

Feeling Accountable?

If you have an accountability partner, you’re 65% more likely to compete a task and you’ll increase your chance of success by up to 95%, according to a study done by The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD).

I’ve found this to be true. After I moved to my new home, I started walking outdoors for exercise and since I didn’t know anyone here yet, I just explored the neighborhood – not going too far from my home base, and making sure I had my phone with me in case one of the twisty roads or trails in our development got me turned around.

I got to meet a few folks in the neighborhood, but I really bonded with one in particular! It’s Joan – and we hit it off from day one! She asked to walk with me – and through that simple outreach, we became fast friends! Bonus points for my husband and her husband getting along as well. We all have a lot of the same interests, and most importantly, love to get together for a chat and a cocktail occasionally.

Well, our daily walk became a routine, and we quickly became accountable to each other. Every morning after I finish my daily company call, I text her and say “walking today”? We share our plans and head outdoor at the same time and take our walk. We have explored our area much more thoroughly once we had a buddy with us. She knows the area and has shown me so many fun parks to hike through. We head out and set our GPS and track our walks. In good weather, we walk 2-3 miles, and even when the snows came, our goal was 2.0. Once the Minnesota weather got fierce, we resigned ourselves to the fact that perhaps we needed to find a place to walk indoors – and we did – and it still offers us the chance to spend an hour together, chatting and discussing life.

We are totally accountable to each other! A day doesn’t go by where we don’t connect and share our plans for the day. On the days when it’s cold and blustery, the only reason I bundle up and get my boots on is because I know Joan is waiting. It’s the greatest system – and it works!!

I have some important health goals that I am working towards. I want to continue releasing this stupid Covid weight that I gathered in 2020, and am committed to the other good habits I am trying to establish. So I want some accountability partners! How are those New Year’s Resolutions coming along?

Why, oh why, would anyone do this to themselves?

So let 2021 be the year we are kind to ourselves – to choose a word to define the year, and gently work to achieve our goals but allow ourselves to do it OUR way – with grace. We’ve spent this first month getting organized and figuring out where this year is going to lead us, so now let’s take a step to better health and moving our bodies more.

Habit Stacking – the Art of the Bag Drop

I started tracking my habits a few months ago. I had given myself some daily “gotta-dos” – and found that a paper tracker worked pretty well – unless I wasn’t at my desk. Then I found that Evernote has a good checklist – that could work, but the best way I have found to establish new habits (and track them) is to start “habit stacking”.

An article I found talked about the Bag Drop method. i.e. – the minute you get home and drop your bag, let that trigger your workout, or starting dinner, or having a glass of wine – oops, maybe not that one. So I started adding to my list to see if this would help me do the absolute things I wanted to accomplish each day.

Since I work from home (and am a night owl), I try to get myself up at about 8 am, mix up my iced tea and take my vitamins, glance at Twitter, then ready myself for my daily 9 am call. Then I would get distracted and sometimes still be at my computer putting out fires until noon or later… So much for my Tai Chi, my daily walk, drinking my water, and other tasks less work-oriented. That’s when I started stacking.

Right after my morning call, I do my call follow-up which triggers 20 min playing Tai Chi. That warms me up for walking – so I get my shoes, phone, and water, and head over to meet my walking buddy. It’s a stack – and I am not “done” until that is over with. Of course, I will sometimes have an appointment or other obligation to take care of, but that is a conscious decision – not just a distraction.

I have found by having this routine, I don’t change my mind about my commitment to move – or to meet my workout buddy. It’s my schedule – and I’ve already allotted the time to it, so it happens. This, along with a few other fun things – like rewarding myself with listening to a podcast or book – or treating myself to a new nail polish or other bauble.

Habit stacking increases the likelihood that you’ll stick with a habit by stacking your new behavior on top of an old one. This process can be repeated to chain numerous habits together, each one acting as the cue for the next.

For instance, your morning routine habit stack might look like this:

  1. After I pour my morning cup of coffee, I will meditate for sixty seconds.
  2. After I meditate for sixty seconds, I will write my to-do list for the day.
  3. After I write my to-do list for the day, I will immediately begin my first task.
    – and so on…

Habit stacking allows you to create a set of simple rules that guide your future behavior. It’s like you always have a game plan for which action should come next. Once you get comfortable with this approach, you can develop general habit stacks to guide you whenever the situation is appropriate. Make sure your trigger is specific and clear and you will be on your way to getting things done!
